From 19th to 22nd September, we gathered in Desborough, United Kingdom, to celebrate an incredible milestone – 35 years of our network, and 35 years of our friendship.
Back in 1989, a group of mayors dared to dream of a Europe without borders. This dream became the Charter of European Rural Communities – a symbol of unity, bringing people together from all the corners of Europe. The volunteers, host families, and communities are the true heroes behind this journey. Without your dedication, we wouldn’t be here today, celebrating this extraordinary achievement. Thank you!
Through all the changes—Brexit, the challenges of COVID, and the lack of EU funding—we are still here. Our friendships are strong, and meeting in the United Kingdom is a reminder of
the bonds we’ve built that transcend politics and borders.
We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to all who made this event possible, especially to Desborough & District Twinning Association (Friends of Europe Desborough) that demonstrated incredible hospitality and filled every moment spent in Desborough with warmth. From teatime traditions to exploring the Heritage Centre, and the memorable culinary evening – even though the weekend was short, it was at the same time full of meaning.
We also relived moments from our very first meeting. Special thanks go to Martine, Tony, and Mattie for sharing those memories, and to the former Charter officials who sent messages – it truly was a beautiful way to reflect on our journey.
Cheers to the Charter, and here’s to a bright future together!
